BestPlay for HumpDay - Jelly Belly

A baking tray, packets of jelly (try to find one that uses natural colours and flavours when possible) or use this recipe to make up some natural jelly, some accessories like small sticks, leaves or flowers, animal figurines or Duplo people (just make sure you are supervising your little one all the time and that the items aren’t small enough to be a choking hazard.).

Make up the jelly according to the packet instructions or the recipe. Once it's set, pour your jelly onto the baking tray.

Place the tray in front of your child. Give them time to explore the jelly. They might want to dive right in or they might be a bit unsure about this sticky, new substance. When they do put their hands in, they will be met by all the wonderful textures and qualities of jelly! This sensory experience sends so many messages to their brain through their hands. Once you little one has spent as long as they need exploring the texture of the jelly, try introducing some accessories and show your child how to move them around in the jelly and how the jelly sticks to them.

You can also talk to them about the jelly using lots of lovely describing words to discuss how the jelly feels in their hands. Say things like: “Isn’t it squishy/sticky/slippery/slimey/sloppy/smooth?”
